General
How long does window film last?
Quality professionally installed window film can range widely, from 5 to 25+ years, depending on the film type, whether it's interior or exterior, sun exposure, and how it's cared for. Solar and security films made for architectural glass are built to hold up to years of UV and temperature swings thanks to their adhesive inhibitors. The beauty of dealing with Canopy is that our films are backed by a manufacturer's warranty (where applicable), so there is real peace of mind built in. On installation, we'll educate you on how to care for it and how long the warranty lasts, so you can relax knowing it's taken care of.
Does window film work on existing glass, or do I need new windows?
Yes, it works on your existing glass! That's one of the biggest benefits of window film. Instead of buying expensive pre-tinted or specialty glass, the film is installed right over the glass you already have. That makes it a much more affordable way to add solar control, privacy, security, or bird-safe protection than replacing your windows, and without sacrificing quality. We assess your existing glazing first to confirm the right film for it.
Do you serve both commercial and residential clients?
Yes! Canopy Films & Finishes works with commercial, institutional, and residential clients across London and Southwestern Ontario, from storefronts, offices, hospitals, schools, and facilities to homes. The right film and approach differ by building and goal, so we either spec each project to the site or follow the specs required, working with you so that all standards are met.
What areas do you serve?
We're based in London, Ontario and serve London and the surrounding Southwestern Ontario region. If you're not sure whether your location is in range, just contact us, and we'd be happy to get back to you and figure out a solution.
Solar & Heat Control
Will solar window film make my rooms dark?
It depends on the film you choose, so the honest answer is that it's up to you. Typically, the darker the film, the more heat and light it blocks, and the lighter the film, the more natural light stays. Film technology is improving year after year, and there are now lighter films that reject more heat, so you can often find that middle ground of good light and strong heat control. There's a wide range, from nearly invisible to more tinted, and we'll show you samples and help you pick the right balance of light, heat control, and privacy for your space. One thing every film does, light or dark: block the harmful UV rays that fade your floors, furniture, and finishes.
Does window film really reduce heat and cooling costs?
Yes. Solar control film rejects a significant portion of the sun's heat before it enters, which improves comfort, reduces hot spots, and eases the load on air conditioning. In the winter, some films can also help keep heat inside. Year-round, film blocks most UV, helping protect your flooring, furniture, and finishes from fading. We can't give an exact savings number, though, because so many factors affect it that aren't visible on the surface, like insulation, foundation, how many people are in the home, and more, all of which can change the savings drastically.
Security & Safety
Does security film make glass unbreakable?
No, and be cautious of anyone who says it does. Security film doesn't make glass unbreakable. After a hard impact the glass will likely still crack and need to be replaced, but instead of shattering into dangerous pieces, it stays held together in the frame. That's what makes it effective: it strengthens the glazing, slows forced-entry attempts, and keeps broken glass from falling apart, which is a real deterrent to anyone trying to break in and a safety benefit if glass ever does break. It's about protection and delay, not an impenetrable barrier. We'll always explain honestly what it can and can't do for your situation.
What's the difference between safety film and security film?
They're related. Safety film is mainly about protecting people, holding glass together so it doesn't cause injury when it breaks from impact, storms, or accidents. Security film focuses on delaying forced entry and intrusion. Many films do both to varying degrees, but the right system depends on the film construction, the glass, the framing, the attachment method, and the level of protection required. We spec it to your specific needs.
Is security film worth it?
Yes. For businesses, storefronts, and many commercial and retail spaces, it adds a layer of protection against break-ins, smash-and-grab, and accidental breakage, and keeps shattered glass from becoming a hazard or liability. It's a cost-effective upgrade compared to replacing glazing or adding bars and shutters. We assess your space and recommend the right film and method.
For homes, also yes. Unfortunately, break-ins are more common today than ever, so from a peace-of-mind standpoint, security film is a great addition to protect yourself and your family. Paired with your other security features, like locked doors and an alarm, it means that in your safe space, your home, you know you've done everything you can to protect it.
Bird-Safe
How does bird-safe window film work?
Bird-safe film applies visual markers to the glass that birds can see and recognize as a barrier. Birds normally can't perceive clear or reflective glass and try to fly through it, so these markers help prevent collisions that cause injury or death, a growing concern for buildings with large glazed areas, or even a small window in a home. It's applied to your existing glass, so a building can meet bird-friendly expectations without replacing any glazing, or it can be applied to new glazing before installation if required. Effective bird-safe film relies on markers spaced correctly to actually deter birds, which is what we install to.
Is bird-safe film visible from inside the building?
Yes, but in our experience people stop noticing them after a while. The markers are small and are designed to be noticeable enough to birds while preserving your view and daylight from inside. From indoors they read as a subtle pattern rather than a blocked window, and most people forget they're even there. It's a practical way to reduce bird strikes without giving up the glass you have.
Do bird-friendly window film requirements apply in Ontario?
Bird-friendly design is an increasingly common requirement, referenced in guidance like CSA A460 and built into a number of municipal development guidelines, and in some cases it's simply a choice made by property managers or building owners. We work to the intent of that bird-friendly guidance, helping buildings meet those expectations on their existing glass. For a specific project, we'll help you understand what applies.
Privacy & Decorative
Does "one-way" window film really work? Can people see in at night?
This is the most common question we get in the industry, and the honest answer surprises people: true "one-way" film doesn't actually exist. What's sold as one-way film is really reflective (mirror) film, and it works entirely on light balance, whichever side of the glass is brighter becomes the mirror, and the darker side is the one you can see through. During the day, the sun makes the outside brighter, so the film mirrors outward: people outside see a reflection, and you see out clearly. At night it reverses, your interior lights make the inside the brighter side, so the mirror effect flips and people outside can see in. That's just physics, not a defect, and no reflective film on the market gets around it. For nighttime privacy you'll still want blinds or curtains, or a frosted/decorative film that obscures the view completely, day and night, in both directions. We'll always tell you straight which option actually fits your space, no overpromising.
Can window film add privacy without blocking light?
Yes. Frosted and decorative films add privacy while still letting natural light through, or blocking it more fully if you prefer. You can choose full frost, gradients, patterns, or custom-cut designs, applied to all or part of the glass. It's a clean way to add privacy to partitions, offices, storefronts, and bathrooms without heavy coverings.
Wall Graphics & Custom Work
Do you do custom printed graphics and wall vinyl, or just window film?
Both. Alongside window film, we handle custom printed graphics, wall vinyl, lettering, logos, and surface wraps for offices, lobbies, storefronts, and more. Whether it's a frosted logo on glass, branded wall graphics, or a full feature wall, we manage the project from artwork to a clean, professional installation.
Can you design the graphics, or do I need to supply my own artwork?
Either works. If you already have your logo or artwork, we'll prepare and install it. If you need design help, we coordinate that through trusted design partners, so you don't have to source it yourself. Just tell us what you're picturing and we'll figure out the best way to get there.
Where can wall vinyl and graphics be installed?
Most smooth interior surfaces. Walls, glass, doors, partitions, and some fixtures. It's a popular way to add branding, colour, wayfinding, or a feature wall to offices, retail spaces, and institutional buildings without paint or permanent changes. We assess the surface first to make sure the material and finish are right for it.
Is wall vinyl permanent, or can it be removed?
It's designed to be durable while it's up, and most wall and surface vinyl can be removed when you want a change without rebuilding the space, though removal may sometimes require minor drywall or paint touch-ups. It's a flexible, cost-effective way to refresh a look or update branding compared to intricate painting or renovation. We'll recommend the right material for how long you want it to last.
Can you match my brand colours and logo?
Yes. Printed graphics and cut vinyl can be produced to match your brand colours and logo, so the finished look is consistent with the rest of your branding. Just provide your brand details or artwork, and we'll make sure it's reproduced properly.
Cost & Process
How much does window film cost?
Cost depends on the film type, the amount and type of glass, access, and the specifics of the space, so there's no single price. As a rough range, most window film professionally installed with quality materials tends to fall somewhere between $6 and $25 per square foot, and film is generally far more affordable than replacing glazing. We've also built a calculator to help: if you'd like a more realistic range based on your film type and square footage, head over to our instant estimate tool. For an accurate number, request a quote with your project details and we'll get back to you and scope it to the site.
